Stitching Africa Human Rights Network Foundation (AHRN) is a Non-Governmental Organization, NGO, registered as such on No: I-NGO/0009181 with the Office of NGOs in Tanzania. AHRN was founded on 10 March 2016 on the initiative of local Human Rights Defenders operating in the African Great Lakes Region and members of African Diaspora living in The Netherlands. The main objective was to protect and provide advocacy efforts for at-risk activists in the region.
Since 2020, AHRN has been focusing on providing training, networking opportunities and financial support to grassroots youth organisations in more than 25 African countries, especially those movements working on climate justice, gender equality and the rights of minorities and indigenous people.
Until now, in June 2025, AHRN provides a platform to more than 430 civil society NGOs and over 1500 individual activists in Africa.
The mission of AHRN is to facilitate, through various activities, the promotion, protection and capacity building of Human Rights Defenders in the Great Lakes region, and thus strengthen the role of Civil Society in the region
AHRN’s vision is to be the primary support and platform for local human rights defenders and their organizations in the Great Lakes Region and enable them to work together for a better community. By doing so, AHRN seeks a better Great Lakes Region without any human rights violations.
